FIRST IMPRESSIONS!

Honduras! What an unexpected series of first impressions. We expected hot, but it has been gloriously cool. I expected mosquitoes, but have only seen three! We expected parched hard packed ground, instead we´ve been treated to vistas extremely similar to Ruidosa, New Mexico! Right down to the 100 ft pine trees blanketing the side of the purple and blue mountain ranges. The air is fresh and genrerally cool. The houses, very similar in size and shape to those in Sri Lanka are dotted within the folds of the hills, the red tile roofs stand in stark contrast to the bright colors of the house walls and the lush verdant greens of the forest. As the overdue rain began to fall breaking the drought, the clouds lay low on the purple hued mountain tops. We haven´t seen this beauty since a Colorado vacation several years ago. The children´s feeding center- daycare center supported by Bread For A Hungry World, pictured above is an absolut marvel! They have an excellent program taking care of about 30 children ages 6 and under come from some of the poorest families in the community. We were told by Bob Wilkerson, the amazing 80 year old director, that the only meals some of these children get are the 2 meals they are served at the center. The portions are generous and each child´s bowl is licked clean. Bob explained that even though they are young they are smart enough to know that they might not eat again for a long time so they eat every bite. He leaned over and explained that Friday afternoon will be the last meal several will get until Monday morning. The daycare is closed for the weekend! Bread does have a Saturday feeding program distributing beans and corn to 40 or 50 families. We hope those children´s parents are there and they will get a few tortilla and beans before Monday. We are again humbled and thank God for our blessings!
